The merits of fasting in Achoura

One of Allah’s blessings to His servants is the many opportunities that He gives them throughout the year. They can get closer to Him, get the best rewards for the Hereafter and receive His immense forgiveness. And all this is for the sole purpose of showering us with His blessings. All the most magnificent praises belong to Allah the Creator of the heavens and the earth.

Among these occasions that have been given to us is the fast of Ashura in which Muslims commemorate the liberation of Moses and his people.

Indeed Allah saved them from the oppression of Pharaoh. When the Prophet (pbuh) was asked about the Ashura fast, the Prophet (pbuh) said, “It is to atone for the sins of the past year.

The fasting of Ashura is a Sunnah that is not obligatory but is still highly recommended.

The Prophet – prayers and blessings upon him – said on this subject: “Today is the day of Ashura, Allah has not made its fasting obligatory for you; let him who wants to fast, and let him who does not want to fast not fast.”
